There are busses and minibuses but these are difficult to negotiate for those not in the know. Also they are very crowded most of the time and drive very fast.
The subway in Cairo is another matter altogether. It goes all over the centre of Cairo and out to Helioplois and El Maadi and other suburbs and will take you out to Giza. It is a very efficient and effective form of transport. Watch out for local customs about certain carriages being reserved for women, etc. There are two lines forming a cross and a third one planned to go to the airport.
Lots of people prefer to use taxis to get around Cairo. As with taxis the world over, some are brilliant and others could be better. If you are taking a long trip by taxi be sure and agree the cost and time before you set out. If on one of your first few days you get a taxi driver that you can communicate with you can try and book him for a further trip or trips. The cost will be very reasonable and you’ll be able to get to many places.
If you prefer you can also rent a car if you’re adventurous and wish to see the city on your own but really for most people this is not an option.
Another great way to see the most of Cairo is to take a guided tour of the city. They will take you around to the different attractions and you won’t have to worry about anything. You may wish to consider that when you’re in Cairo.
You’ll decide which is the best means of transportation for you. Then you’ll be out there seeing everything you can of this great city of Cairo.
